How to Care for Your Bras So They Actually Last
Your bra works hard every single day, and most of us treat it like a t-shirt: throw it in the wash, tumble dry it, shove it in a drawer, repeat. But the good news is that a few tiny habits can make your bras last months longer — and keep them fitting the way they should. This is the honest, no-guilt version of bra care.
The one rule that changes everything: don't wash them on a cycle that fights them.
Wash them gently, and wash them less.
- Hand-wash if you can — it's genuinely the best thing for a bra. A soak in cool water with a gentle detergent, a few presses, and a rinse is all it takes. Delicate lace and underwires thank you.
- If you machine-wash, use the gentle cycle. Put your bra in a mesh lingerie bag, zip it, wash on cold and delicate. Skip the spin-heavy aggressive cycles.
- Wash them every few wears, not every day. A bra isn't a gym sock. Washing it too often wears out the elastic and the cup. Every 2–3 wears is a sensible baseline; more than that in summer or when you sweat.
- Skip the fabric softener. It coats the fibres, breaks down the stretch, and can make a band go limp. Gentle detergent, no softener, no bleach.
Dry them the right way — and this is the big one.
- Never tumble dry a bra. The heat destroys the elastic — the part that does all the supporting — and it's the single fastest way to ruin a bra. Hang it or lay it flat.
- Hang by the centre gore (the bit between the cups), not by the straps. Hanging by the straps stretches them out.
- Lay flat to dry on a towel if you can. It's the safest shape-wise.
Store them the right way.
- Don't crumple or fold the cups. Stack them gently, or hook them and hang them if you have the room. Crumpling distorts the shape and the underwire.
- Let them rest. If you've got a few favourites, alternate them. Elastic needs time to rebound between wears — a bra worn two days in a row loses its grip faster.
When it's time to let one go.
Even with the best care, bras wear out. Signs it's time: the band rides up or stretches out and no longer sits level, the underwire pokes or has snapped, the straps won't hold their shape, the cups are distorted, or it just doesn't give you that reliable "correct" fit that you loved. A bra that's lost its support isn't being kind to you — it's time to retire it and find a fresh one.
Treat a bra like the supportive piece of kit it actually is, and it'll support you right back — for much longer.
Bottom line: hand-wash or gentle-cycle, never tumble dry, hang by the centre, store gently, and know when to let go. Your favourite bra doesn't have to be a disposable item — a little care makes it last. And when it's time to replace it, pick a fit-first style that works for the body you have now. You deserve comfort that holds up. 💗
